If you’re ready to transform your life, this is the post for you!
Making large-scale life changes can be exciting and fun, but it can also be scary and overwhelming. It means leaving behind the life you know, and taking a real chance to create a better life for yourself. But you’ll have no way of knowing if you’ll be successful until you try.
Personally, I believe you have the power to transform your life. If you want your life to be better, I believe you can make that happen. This doesn’t mean the journey will always be easy, but I believe it will be worth it and rewarding.
Here are seven ways to beat the fear and overwhelm so you can transform your life.
Get clear on what isn’t working for you
Before you can really start transforming your life, you need to get clear on what isn’t working for you.
Is it your job? Your career as a whole? Your relationships? One relationship in particular? Your living situation? Where you live?
Whatever it is, identify, specifically, each aspect of your life that isn’t working for you. It can be one area or more than one.
Decide where you’d like to end up
Once you know what isn’t working, go through each area and decide where you’d like to end up. What would your dream scenario be?
Don’t limit yourself. Practical barriers can be worked around. And as long as you still have life to live, you’re never too old to make a meaning change.
It’s okay if you need to take some time to figure things out. But I think it’s important to know where you’re headed on this transformation journey before you really dig in.
With that said, it’s important to note there are probably perspectives and experiences you can’t begin to consider yet. So it’s okay if you don’t know exactly where you want to end up. But it’s helpful to at least know the direction you want to move in.
Take it one thing at a time
If you have several areas of you’re life you’re looking to change, try to focus on one thing at a time. You can probably get away with two or three if their smaller, but one at a time is usually the safest bet.
The reason for this is that change takes adjustment. To truly transform your life, you need to integrate these changes so they become a part of you.
If you try to do too much at once, you’re more likely to be overwhelmed and give up. It doesn’t matter how long it takes you to get where you’re going. It’s just important that you do.
Develop a strategy
Sometimes the scale of transformation can be overpowering. It can be enough to scare us into staying exactly where we are.
But that’s just our brains trying to protect us from the unknown. If it feels good to your heart, don’t let your fear hold you back.
One way to work around the scale and fear that comes with serious transformation is to come up with a strategy for each transformation you want to make.
Your strategies will be unique to you, but the key is to break your transformation down into bite-sized, manageable steps.
It’s also okay if you don’t know every step of the journey. If nothing else, just focus on the next step forward. Then from there, focus on the next step.
Before long, you’ll look around and realize you’re life is completely transformed.
Focus on sustainable change
Part of the reason I always suggest going one step at a time and one thing at a time is because I believe it’s the birth place of sustainability. And I don’t think you can really say you’ve transformed your life if you can’t sustain the changes.
Taking it one thing at a time, and one step at a time, allows you to get used to the changes you’re making so they truly integrate with who you are and the life you’re living.
You also have to consider if the changes you’re making are truly something you can keep up with long term.
It’s one thing to be disciplined while you’re making these changes to your life, but it’s another thing to feel like you’re forcing yourself.
To me, the difference is when you force yourself, you’re miserable. Nothing that makes you miserable is sustainable.
When you’re disciplined, you may find that a new habit or outlook takes some getting used to, but the more you do it, the better it feels. It takes effort to put in place, but it doesn’t make you miserable when you actually do it.
If you have to force yourself to make a change, you might want to take a closer look at the change you’re making. Consider what about it is such a challenge for you and see if there’s a modification you can make so it’s actually sustainable.
What worked for someone else may not work for you. By all means, learn from others, but make sure what you’re doing can stay with you for the long haul.
Look into your psychology (especially if you’re struggling)
No matter what you’re looking to transform, there’s a good probability you’re psychology needs to be transformed right along with you.
This might mean shadow work, self-help, therapy, etc. We all have traumas and limiting beliefs. It’s a natural side effect of living in a dysfunctional world.
In order to truly transform, we need to let go of the limiting beliefs and fears that try to keep us from growing.
This is especially true if you find yourself struggling to make the changes you want to make. If this is the case, there’s a good chance you’re psychology is at the root of your challenges.
Digging into this aspect of transformation is rarely easy or comfortable, but it’s necessary. And it can be the most life-changing.
Trust the process
Transformation isn’t something to be rushed, it’s something to be explored. Don’t put this exploration on a clock.
Trust that if you move through the process and be open to what you learn about yourself along the way, you will end up in an elevated place.
In fact I’ve found that the more I try to rush something like this, the longer it actually takes. I often cut corners, or I’m moving so fast I miss something critical.
Do what you can to slow down and embrace the experience of meeting yourself in a new way.
