I believe the world is a better place when we’re all following our dreams.
This isn’t the first time I’ve said something like this and it absolutely won’t be the last.
When we’re following our dreams, we’re happier, more fulfilled people.
Personally, I believe I’m a better version of myself for pursuing a dream, even if I’m struggling with it in some form. I think this is true for almost all of us. This benefits both us and the world!
However, the idea of chasing and achieving a dream can be overwhelming. Sometimes so overwhelming it stops us from even starting, which is tragic!
So today, we’re going to break down the six manageable steps you can take to make your dreams come true. This can work for any dream, big or small. And I say this as someone who as used this strategy for both!
Let’s dive in!
Step One: Live your dream in your mind
Set aside a good chunk of time–say, at least half an hour–and visualize yourself and your life if you were to accomplish this dream.
Imagine there is nothing standing in the way of you and your dream. Nothing can stop it from coming true. Its success is guaranteed.
Who would you be? What would you do? How would your life change? Who could you help or impact? What would this dream mean to you?
Use your imagination and dream big! There are no limitations right now!
This should be FUN! Don’t let yourself get caught up in negative talk or the “how” of it all. Just live in the energy of successfully bringing your dream to life.
If it’s helpful, journal your dream.
Hang onto this feeling and come back to revisit it as needed.
Step Two: Turn your dream into a goal
A large portion of achieving your dream comes in the form of a mindset shift. Now that you’ve lived in this energy, let those good feelings carry into your reality.
You need to believe that you can and will make this happen. This will give you the drive and determination to meet your goal.
Personally, I also believe if you keep putting this energy and belief out into the world the Universe will support you. You will start to see opportunities for progress and success finding their way to you. I’ve had it happen to me.
Intentions are everything. Turning your dream into a goal you intend to achieve is the backbone to making it a reality.
Step Three: Make a plan
Exactly how your dream comes in isn’t entirely on you. It’s important to leave room for the Universe to co-create your dream with you. So when I say make a plan, I don’t mean write out every step you need to take.
It’s okay if you only know the first couple steps. Or if you know roughly each milestone that needs to happen, but not quite how you’ll actually get to each one.
You may even only know what your first mini-goal or milestone would be. That’s okay. Start where you’re at.
Let your intuition guide you, but don’t force what isn’t there.
You don’t want to overplan (a lesson I took a long time to learn).
However, I believe having some kind of a plan is helpful, no matter loose or rough. It gives you some kind of direction and it gives you milestones to celebrate.
Step Four: Do JUST the first thing
Dreams come true one step at a time. Every time you see someone “reaching their dream” you don’t see numerous steps it took them to get there.
All you have to do right now is focus on the first step. If you know you need to learn a skill, learn the skill. If you know you need to complete a task complete the task. Or if you know you need financing, worry only about getting financing.
Just do this ONE thing.
Don’t worry about the next step, how long it’s taking, or if people will like what you’re doing. Have faith that you were pulled to this idea because the world needs it and you need to be working on it. And because of this, it will happen for you when it’s meant to.
Just focus on this one thing.
Step Five: Do JUST the next thing
Now move to the next thing on your list/plan and put your focus there. If you’re only planning out one step at a time, check in and figure out what your next step/milestone would be, then move forward.
Then prioritize that one thing. Nothing more.
Step Six: Repeat step 5 until your dream comes true
Next, just keep moving forward. Keep repeating step five until your dream comes true.
Be sure you’re focusing on one step at a time.
IMPORTANT: Be open to modifications and new opportunities
How exactly this dream will come true will likely surprise you. I’m a big advocate for making a plan of some kind. I think it gives you direction, momentum, and small victories to celebrate.
Still, you should always be flexible enough to change the plan when it’s appropriate.
New opportunities will find you. New people you never considered will reach out. Your intuition may tell you there’s something extra you should be doing, or you’ve got an extra step you don’t need.
It’s good to make and follow a plan, but it’s just as important to be flexible and open enough to make a change
Bonus: What not to do
Don’t put yourself on a clock/deadline
Everything happens when it’s meant to. If you put yourself on a clock, you’re limiting yourself and your dream.
Perhaps there’s a perfect partner for your dream who is tied up on another project right now. Or perhaps you need to be in a different place to fully enjoy living in your dream.
Be open to the idea that your only job is to believe in yourself, trust the universe, and keeping moving forward.
Things may take longer than you want them to. There may be delays. It’s okay!
Don’t give up on your dream because of the time it will take or cut yourself off from chasing your dream because you’ve reached a certain age. That’s a self-imposed limitation.
Don’t get tunnel vision/become an asshole
The goal here is healthy striving. You want to be striving to bring your dream to life. But you don’t want to grip your dream so tight that you can’t see anything else.
You shouldn’t be missing major life events for the people you value and you shouldn’t be snapping at your friends and family on a regular basis.
This isn’t to say that you can’t or won’t get stressed during this process. You can and you likely will. It just shouldn’t be your regular state of being.
And, you may need to miss an event or two, but you should still be putting a healthy effort into maintaining your relationships.
Your journey to your dream should be enhancing your life, not harming it.
If you find your sole focus in life becomes accomplishing your dream, it’s likely your focus has gotten a little too narrow and it’s time to take a step back.
It’s the act of working towards and believing in our dreams that makes us better, not just achieving them. If you find yourself becoming an asshole, you need to change your approach. Your goal should not be to simply reach the finish line. It’s to learn, grow, and allow it to unfold.
If you get tunnel vision, it’s okay to take a break. Our dreams and our journey toward them should largely feel exciting and invigorating, but we’re also human. Doubts happen. Overwhelm happens.
Celebrate the progress, take care of yourself, and have faith that your dream to come to fruition when it’s mean to.
Don’t get swept up in overwhelm
There may be times where the journey or the scope of your dream gets overwhelming.
Personally, I’ve even been overwhelmed when too much good stuff happened too quickly, and it seriously messed me up and delayed my dream.
So I’m not just talking about overwhelm in a negative way. I’m talking about all forms of it.
The key is to catch it, acknowledge it, and address it in whatever way works best for you.
Don’t give up
I honestly believe the only way you “fail” at your dream is if you give up on it.
If you’re being called to do something, it’s for a reason. We are not called to things that aren’t meant for us. There may be other lessons that need to be learned along the way or other aspects that need to be developed before things come together.
There may be timing and alignment issues. We may be trying to force our dream to come in a certain way, instead of allowing it to come in the right way at the right time. Things may fall apart if you start heading in the wrong direction.
This is what it looks like when your dream is delayed, but a delay is not a failure.
If you believe in your dream enough to keep after it, you will succeed. The Universe will hear you.
The only way you don’t succeed is if you believe you can’t. The Universe hears that too.
