I believe it’s incredibly important that you follow your dreams. It can be a gateway to transforming your life and the lives of those around you.
But all too often, we find reasons not to chase our dreams. It could be our responsibilities, our circumstances, or the simple belief that we don’t have what it takes to succeed.
I believe at the heart of all of these reasons is fear. Fear that we won’t be able to make enough money. Fear that we may let people down or they may be disappointed in us.
And fear that we actually don’t have what it takes to succeed.
Fear can be helpful when it’s protecting us, but often times in this case, it’s holding us back from the lives we’re meant to be living.
To help you work through these fears, here are six reasons why it’s important that you follow your dreams.
It makes you happier
If you’re chasing a dream, it means your chasing something (an activity, career, idea, project, etc) that speaks to your soul.
Because of this, the basic act of committing to your dream and actively pursuing it is going to make you happier. It’s putting you in the arena of something that aligns with you.
This forward motion is going to make you happier than if you decided to opt out of this pursuit.
And more often than not, you’ll find that once you commit to your dream, things start to fall into place for you in some unexpected ways. This is likely to boost your happiness even more.
You’ll learn a lot about yourself
Once you start following your dreams, you’ll likely learn a lot about what you’re capable of. (It’s more than you think!) You’ll also discover a lot about what you need to learn, and your ability to learn it.
It’s also likely that you’ll uncover more about what you want, why, and who you are. The pursuit of this dream is almost guaranteed to put new people, information, and opportunities in your path.
But you’ll never have the chance to discover these things if you don’t try.
You may also learn the root of your dream isn’t the dream itself but the feeling or life you’re trying to create. This may ultimately change your dream, and that’s okay!
At the end of the day, I believe the only way you can truly fail is if you give up on what you want. This isn’t the same as changing your dream, or learning you want something different.
I think we’re all essentially looking to create lives that are generally happy and peaceful, and allow us to do the things that sparks our souls while helping others when we can.
It’s okay if the things that create these circumstances for us change and evolve as we do.
You’ll create a life you really love
When you pursue your dreams, you’re not just prioritizing what you want to do, you’re prioritizing the life you want to have.
It’s not just about doing something that makes you happy or achieving a goal. It’s about the life you’re building around it.
You put yourself in a position to build a life that feels happy, fulfilling and complete.
This creates more space for you be supported, cared for, and excited about life. You can in turn, spread this joy and share this experience with those you care about.
You’ll contribute to the world in a way that’s best suited for you
I believe our dreams call to us for a reason. And I think part of that reason is that our dreams have the potential to enrich the world as much as they enrich us.
It doesn’t matter if your dreams is to be some kind of artist, business owner, online content creator, or what have you. What you want to contribute is exactly what the world needs.
So dream chasing isn’t wholly self-serving. It’s mutually beneficial. Your success is good for everyone because it allows you to serve the world in a way only you can.
You’ll be a better version of yourself
As you become a happier, you’ll also be come more aligned. This naturally makes you a better version of yourself. And when you’re a better version of yourself, you’re better in every area of your life.
For example, if your current job has been eating at your soul, chasing your dream will start to fill your soul. This often makes the job your working more manageable, and you more peacefully productive, until you’re in a position to quit or make a change.
You’re also better for everyone you come into contact with.
It takes so much more energy to force a life that isn’t aligned with you. This often makes you a tired, drained, and sometimes a not-so-nice version of yourself.
Pursuing your dream has the potential to fuel you. Even if it makes you tired sometimes, it’s much more likely that you’ll be tired but happy. This helps you be more kind, present, and helpful for the people in your life.
You’ll inspire others to do the same
Like we’ve talked about, when you make the positive changes you need to make to chase your dream, it’ll create a natural change in you. This change is often noticeable to others.
It’s also often inspiring to others.
Other people see your progress and success and it gives them the belief that they, too, can chase their dreams.
And even more than that, the see the changes it’s personally made in you and decided they’d like that for themselves too.
Everyone reaches this point in their own time, and in their own way. But I know a large reason I found the the drive and courage to chase my own dreams is because other people have changed theirs.
I’ve also heard enough from others who have been inspired by my own journey to chase their own.
You have an opportunity to be a part of an inspiring cycle that has the potential to uplift the world.
